He was born in Hibbing, Minnesota and Raised in Fargo, North Dakota. A gifted athlete and unassuming kind of a guy. He never had a clue that one day there would come a time that other athletes would cheat in order to surpass the Holy Grail that was his.

*61..a number that changed the face and..well...sanctity, if you will, of baseball as we know it forever.

Back in the day, he wasn't supposed to be the guy that would surpass Babe Ruth as the man that would overtake Ruth in baseball's most hallowed record. Life decided differently and against all odds, he did just that on the last day of the season against Tracy Stallard of the Boston Red Sox.

Mickey Mantle was supposed to be the right man for that job and in the summer of 1961, he made a most gallant run (54) and injury stopped his chase...a glorious summer if there ever was one.

Maybe Roger Maris, doesn't belong in the Hall of Fame. On the surface, I might agree. However... Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Mark McGuire, etal., might beg to differ. They knew that Maris' record was the key to fame and fortune. No matter what it took..*61 was their target...and doing an illegal drug to do so was apparantly fine with the Commissioner (Bud Selig) and the owners...Lotsa fame and fortune in the long ball...

Maris changed baseball forever because he surpassed the most revered figure in Major League baseball history and he did it right. It was the assholes that elected to not play the game right that destroyed it...I salute you, Mr. Maris...Real fans know the deal....

And this guy is NOT in the Hall of Fame!??!!!?...Gimme a break!!

What's the most precious thing in your car? Police in St. Augustine, Florida were stunned to find out what one woman's priorities appeared to be. They stopped a motorist over the weekend for allegedly running a red light and discovered a mother and her 16-month-old daughter both sitting in the back of the vehicle with no restraints on. The youngster was allowed to wander freely without an infant seat and nothing to contain her in the event of an accident.

That's bad enough. But what cops found when they peered in closer stunned them. The woman had apparently used the seat belt to keep something safe - a case of beer. The 24 bottles of suds were securely strapped in to ensure nothing happened to them and that they made a safe journey.

The driver, 46-year-old Tina Williams, couldn't explain why the child wasn't properly tethered and refused to take a breathalyzer test at the scene. Police allege they found drug paraphernalia in her purse, and she's since been charged with a host of offences, including driving under the influence, driving without a licence and child abuse.

But maybe the most shocking part of the story is what didn't happen. The mother in the back seat, a 20-year-old woman, has so far not been charged with anything and the youngster was released back into her custody.

The following is in answer to The Rev's comments in the previous post:

Fair enuff. And I understand what you're sayin'.

In my mind for some reason, I see Maris as someone who represents "The Forgotten Man", if you will, in this whole debacle. To me he represents a better time for the game.

We can talk about a handful of ballplayers who cheated in the past and discuss character issues 'til the crack of dawn. I'm trying to narrow this whole thing down because of the vast dynamics involved and it is difficult. But I'll try.

Whenya get right down to it, this whole thing is about, "The Long Ball", "The Home-Run", "Goin' Yard",etc. It's always been the most instant game-changing, almost majestic moment in a baseball game. What I don't want future generations to forget is that when it's all said and done, that Maris is the guy that did it best, most in one year, and fairest of any of 'em.

I find it sooo disconcerting that during the time he chased Ruth, he was so unfairly villified and yet 35 some years later, Mcguire and Sosa were embraced. And between all three of them, Maris is the only one we feel reasonably certain about that didn't do PED's. To put it in a more fundamental way...We have little doubt that Maris was REAL. And no matter what anyone says...his home-runs were not fraudulent. This game needs to remember and acknowledge that. It needs to make a statement that MLB is about fair-play and I think people and fans have not been fair in their regard for Maris and if putting him in the Hall before the steroid era occurred was debateable, to me, it becomes a no-brainer afterward.

I'm not saying that putting him in would be a panacea. What I AM saying is that MLB needs a feel-good story. A glimmer of hope that "The Great American Pastime" still has it's values. I think Roger Maris represents those and is the best candidate to make that statement.

If there was ever a time that a ballplayer transcended conventional thinking about entrance into the Hall of Fame, it is now. Call it symbolic, call it "an old dude longing for the past", maudlin or what have you because, it's all those things.

And if you don't "long for the past" after all this...You just weren't THERE....

All kidding aside, let me see if I can explain my stance on this so you might be able to see exactly where I'm comin' from....

First, I think we can all agree that MLB is in shambles as far as the effect that "The Steroid Era" has had on the integrity and credibility of the history of the game. Since the future of the game is in question and its past has always been so important to its very existence, something needs to be done to help heal these wounds. "Damage Control", if you will, and I think putting Maris in the Hall is a helluva start.

Anybody that knows anything about Maris knows what he went through back in 1961 and I think I've probably gone over that enough in case they didn't. Not only was a good and honorable man maligned during that period for having the nerve to knock a god-like icon (Ruth) off of his throne in his own castle by playing by the same rules as everyone else did, his achievement and legacy was tarnished 37 years later by not one, but two individuals (Mcguire/Sosa) who were allowed to cheat in doing so.

There is a time and a place for everything, as they say, and whether or not Maris' stats over his career are comparable to anyone else in the Hall or out of it is irrelevant. What IS relevant is that it was HIS record that was the catalyst for men to go to ANY means necessary to capture that Holy Grail..even if it meant breaking the rules. By denying Maris his rightful place in the Hall and even discussing the merits of Bonds, Clemens, Mcguire etal., is not only an egregeous insult to Maris, but to me as a fan. Furthermore, it's also an insult to the ballplayers you mentioned.

Baseball needs a symbol. Now more than ever and as quick as possible to start the healing. That symbol doesn't necessarily need to come from a ballplayer that attains Ruthian heights as much as it does a symbol of a man who played the game by the rules. In Maris...They have BOTH.

In summary:

If you have 2 or 3 individuals out of say...600 that cheat and the other 597 don't, chances are that the sheer numbers of the ones that DON'T would probably prevail in most organizations when it comes to the credibility of that organization....Obviously, the more that cheat, the worse the credibility becomes and that is, without question, the case in MLB.

...I think it's fair to say that a lot of us envy the lifestyle of MLB players...They get paid millions of dollars for playing a kid's game and, in effect, get to extend their childhood for a whole lot more years than the rest of us...Not only that, but they also have the money to purchase "toys" anytime they want, they don't have the stress of money problems as most of us do, they are revered, famous, admired and even thought of as heroes...All-in-all, relatively speaking,..They "got it made.."

Somewhere along the way, it becomes almost impossible for them not to believe and internalize that this "gift" is anything less than a "birthright" and that it's going to last forever...In a word, they are "spoiled."

Like any spoiled kid, they are going to do pretty much whatever they can to get their way...rules and life's regulations don't really apply to them...those are for "the rest of us..."...and we, the fan, rarely give them any reason to think otherwise..

I don't wish them any ill-will any more than I would anyone...They were dealt some pretty good cards and just like you and me..they are playin' 'em...

Even tho' I wish this was my last post on this issue...I ain't makin' no promises..The following is something I posted today on "Fox Sports"

I think older fans, such as myself, remember a time as kids watching teams that kept the same players for years and consequently, you felt there was a built-in loyalty both ways...You actually saw these guys come on up thru the ranks, from minors to the majors and you felt like they were part of your family...a part of your identity, if you will...

When Curt Flood had the balls to challenge the "bound to one team" factor that baseball had that had never been challenged before and won...It opened the door for "free-agency" and that special bond ended as it became about the "money"...

I know it sounds trite...and it is... but "money is the root of all evil" permeated baseball and it was only a matter of time before the decay set in and "preserving and protecting the integrity of the game" became an afterthought..

.The reality is: Ruth, Maris, Mantle, Gibson, Mays, Killebrew, Williams, Musial, Robinson etal., are gone...The one common denominator to the past was "Records" achieved by the same rules on an equal playing field...Steroids and Greed ruined that forever and for people like myself who truly loved the game because it gave you the opportunity to be a kid again and have "heroes" no matter what age you were...They yanked it out from under you and you lost a lot of "that kid" and maybe some of the "innocence" that went with it...It forces you to grow-up and see the world for what it is...and it's pretty damn distasteful..

..Baseball, at least gave you hope and an escape from that reality on occasion..

Sioux Falls police Tuesday arrested a 60-year-old man for burglary and for what they believe is at least two years worth of video-taped public sex acts.

Verle Peter Dills was arrested at his home at 2613 W. Bailey St. after a man who lives in the 1200 block of North Kiwanis Avenue chased Dills out of his yard Monday evening, police spokesman Loren McManus said.

The man saw Dills with a video camera and tripod and chased him for a short distance, McManus said. When the man returned home, Dills also returned with his camera and again was chased from the yard. He was seen entering the garage at 2613 W. Bailey St., McManus said.

There police found the video camera and a “large amount” of 8mm and VHS video of Dills engaged in masturbation and sex acts with traffic signs near his home, McManus said.

“We don’t know how long he’s been doing this,” he said.

He is charged with burglary, unlawful occupancy and six charges of indecent exposure.

He is being held in the Minnehaha County jail on $100,000 cash bond.
